What is High Pressure Laminate (HPL)?

It is considered one of the most durable decorative surface materials and is available with unique performance properties, including chemical, fire, and wear resistance. HPL is produced by saturating multiple layers of kraft paper with phenolic resin. Before pressing, a layer of printed decor paper is placed on top of the kraft paper. The resulting sandwich is fused under heat and pressure (over 1,000 PSI). The curing process transforms the resin into plastic by a cross-linking process that converts the paper sheets into a single, rigid, laminated sheet.

Compact laminate HPL panels typically consist of 60% to 70% paper and 30% to 40% thermosetting resin. They consist of three layers: overlay paper, decorative paper, and vellum paper. Overlay paper helps improve the abrasion and scratch resistance. The decorative paper increases aesthetic appeal through design, and the kraft paper is the core material to control thickness.
